Part 4: Herbs & Spices That Help Support Gut Health Naturally
Wendy Francis, NBC-HWC – Board-Certified Health Coach and Functional Nutritionist
This is Part 4 of our herbal wellness series where we’re exploring herbs and spices that have been used for generations to support health naturally.
Today we’re focusing on gut health, which may be one of the most overlooked foundations of overall wellness.
Your gut does far more than digest food. It plays a major role in immune function, inflammation, nutrient absorption, mood, energy, brain health, and even nervous system regulation.
When the gut is struggling, the body often lets you know.
This can show up as:
- Bloating
- Gas and digestive discomfort
- Brain fog
- Fatigue
- Food sensitivities
- Irregular digestion
- Skin issues
- Inflammation
- Mood changes
Modern lifestyles can be very hard on the gut. Chronic stress, ultra-processed foods, alcohol, lack of fiber, poor sleep, medications, and constantly eating on the go can all impact the gut microbiome and digestive system over time.
The good news is that nature provides many herbs and spices that may help support digestion, soothe the gut, and promote a healthier internal environment.
Ginger
Ginger is one of the best-known herbs for digestive support and has been used for centuries across many cultures.
It may help support digestion, reduce bloating, ease nausea, and encourage healthy movement through the digestive tract.
Ginger also contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that may support overall gut wellness.
Helpful tip: Fresh ginger tea after meals can be a simple way to support digestion naturally.
Peppermint
Peppermint is well known for its calming effect on the digestive system.
It may help relax digestive muscles and support occasional bloating, cramping, and digestive discomfort.
Many people find peppermint tea especially soothing after meals or during times of stress when digestion feels off.
Helpful note: Peppermint may not be ideal for everyone, especially those prone to reflux or heartburn.
Fennel
Fennel has traditionally been used to support digestion and reduce gas and bloating.
In many cultures, fennel seeds are commonly chewed after meals to help support digestive comfort and freshen breath naturally.
Fennel may also help support healthy digestion by encouraging relaxation within the digestive tract.
Chamomile
Most people think of chamomile for relaxation and sleep, but it can also be incredibly supportive for the gut.
The gut and nervous system are deeply connected, which means stress often shows up physically in digestion.
Chamomile may help support both relaxation and digestive comfort, making it a wonderful option for people whose stomach issues tend to worsen during stressful periods.
Turmeric
Turmeric continues to show up throughout this series because of how broadly supportive it can be for the body.
Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds may help support digestive wellness and inflammatory balance within the gut.
Because inflammation can impact digestion significantly, supporting a healthy inflammatory response may also benefit gut health over time.
Helpful tip: Pair turmeric with black pepper for improved absorption.
Oregano
Oregano is rich in plant compounds and antioxidants that may help support microbial balance and overall gut wellness.
Oregano oil is extremely potent and should be used carefully and appropriately, but using oregano as a culinary herb regularly can be a simple way to support health naturally.
This is another reminder that many powerful wellness tools may already be sitting in your kitchen.
Gut Health Is About More Than Supplements
As a health coach, I always remind clients that gut health is not fixed by taking a random probiotic while continuing habits that constantly stress the digestive system.
Your gut responds to your daily lifestyle.
Supporting the gut often includes:
- Eating more whole foods and fiber
- Reducing ultra-processed foods
- Managing stress levels
- Hydrating properly
- Moving daily
- Improving sleep quality
- Eating more slowly and mindfully
- Supporting the gut microbiome with variety
The gut is constantly communicating with the brain, immune system, and nervous system. When you support the gut consistently, many people notice improvements far beyond digestion alone.
