From Cucumber to Pickle: A Lesson in Transformation
Wendy Francis, NBC-HWC – Board-Certified Health Coach, Functional Nutritionist, Associate Professor SUNY Nutritional Health Studies
For some reason, this week has been filled with pickles. I recently wrote about the health benefits of pickles and then shared how easy it is to make them at home. After making a fresh batch myself, I started thinking about cucumbers, vinegar, spices, and the simple process that transforms one thing into something completely different.
While traveling this week, I randomly chose a church I had never attended before and heard a message that perfectly connected to the pickle blogs I had just written. A beautiful reminder that God doesn’t make mistakes and His timing is always perfect.
During the message, the pastor shared an analogy about baptism that immediately caught my attention.
He said that when a cucumber is placed into a brine, it becomes a pickle. Once that transformation happens, it can never go back to being a cucumber.
Transformation Requires Surrender
A cucumber can sit next to the brine forever and never change. It can look at the jar. It can learn about the jar. It can even know what is inside the jar. But until it is immersed in the brine, nothing happens.
The same can be true in our faith journey.
We can attend church, read devotionals, listen to podcasts, and surround ourselves with Christian influences. Those things are good and important. But true transformation happens when we fully surrender and allow God to work in our hearts.
Made New in Christ
Baptism is an outward expression of an inward change. It symbolizes dying to our old self and being raised to new life in Christ.
Just like the cucumber enters the brine and emerges transformed, God invites us into a life-changing relationship with Him. The old ways of thinking, old habits, old fears, and old identities begin to give way to something new.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
2 Corinthians 5:17
What Are You Soaking In?
The transformation does not always happen overnight. Much like making pickles, there is a process. The cucumber sits in the brine and slowly absorbs what surrounds it.
As believers, we are continually being shaped by God’s Word, His presence, and His truth. Day by day, little by little, He molds us into the people He created us to be.
That leads to a powerful question:
What are you soaking in?
Are you immersing yourself in God’s Word? Are you surrounding yourself with influences that draw you closer to Him? Are you allowing Him to continue His transforming work in your life?
God Is Still Working
Here is the beautiful part: once a pickle becomes a pickle, it never becomes a cucumber again.
When God transforms a life, He does not simply improve it. He makes it new.
The good news is that God is not finished with any of us yet.
He is still working. Still refining. Still transforming.
One day at a time. One choice at a time. One step of faith at a time.
A Simple Reflection
Take a quiet moment today and ask yourself:
What area of my life am I still trying to hold onto instead of surrendering to God?
Then thank Him for the ways He has already transformed your heart, your mind, and your life.
Because once God gets hold of a life, nothing is ever quite the same again.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your transforming power. Thank You that You do not leave us as we are but lovingly shape us into who You created us to be. Help us to fully surrender every area of our lives to You. May we spend time immersed in Your Word and Your presence so that our hearts continue to reflect You more each day. Thank You for making us new through Christ.
Amen.
