Pray More Specifically: Stop Asking God to Fix Everything and Start Asking for the Strength to Change
Wendy Francis, Certified Believer & Daughter of the King
One thing I have been learning lately is that the way we pray matters.
Not because God needs the perfect words. Not because prayer is a formula. But because sometimes our prayers are so broad, so emotional, and so rushed that we are not even fully aware of what we are truly asking for.
I used to pray the way many of us do when life feels heavy: “God, fix this.” “Lord, help me.” “Please make this better.” And of course, God hears every cry of the heart. He knows what we mean even when we do not say it well.
But over time, I have noticed something powerful. When I began praying more specifically, something started to shift. I actually got this idea from using ChatGPT and AI tools. The better the prompts (requests), the better the results. The more specific my request, the better the response. At first, praying that way started unintentionally. But when I started to see some very specific, prayers answered quickly, I made the connection. If it’s true or not, it doesn’t hurt to try.
Instead of only saying, “God, fix this,” I started praying things like:

There Is a Difference Between Wanting Rescue and Asking for Renewal
Sometimes we want God to remove the problem immediately, but God wants to build something in us while we walk through it.
We ask Him to make it go away. He may instead give us endurance. We ask Him to change someone else. He may begin changing us. We ask for the door to open, and He may first give us discernment, patience, or courage.
That does not mean He is ignoring us. It may mean He is answering at a deeper level than we expected.
Specific prayer has helped me realize that what I often needed most was not instant relief, but the inner strength, wisdom, and support to become different in the middle of what I was facing.
God Is Not a Search Engine, but He Cares About the Details
I have actually learned something interesting through everyday life: the more clearly we express what we need, the more focused our response becomes. And while God is obviously not a machine and prayer is never transactional, He absolutely cares about the details of our hearts.
He already knows what we need before we ask, but prayer changes us. Prayer aligns us. Prayer slows us down enough to name what is really going on beneath the surface.
Sometimes what sounds like “fix this” is really:
- Help me stop reacting in fear.
- Help me break this habit.
- Help me trust You when I do not understand.
- Help me forgive.
- Help me become disciplined.
- Help me notice the lesson instead of just the pain.
That kind of prayer opens the door for real transformation.
When You Pray Specifically, You Begin to Notice God More Clearly
I do not like to call things coincidence when I know God is involved. But I will say this: since I have started praying more specifically, I have noticed more strength, more clarity, more conviction, and more of the right tools showing up at the right time.
A conversation. A verse. A shift in mindset. An unexpected opportunity. The courage to do something I had been avoiding. The self-control to respond differently. The ability to finally make a change that I had prayed about for a long time.
Maybe the answer was not that God magically removed every obstacle. Maybe the answer was that He faithfully equipped me to move through it.
And honestly, that kind of answered prayer builds deeper faith, because you begin to see that He is not only working for you, He is working in you.
A Better Way to Pray
If you have been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or discouraged, maybe try shifting the way you pray.
Instead of only asking God to take the struggle away, ask Him to strengthen you in the middle of it.
Instead of simply asking Him to fix everything around you, ask Him what He wants to build within you.
Instead of praying vague prayers from a place of panic, slow down and get honest. Be specific. Be sincere. Be humble.
You might pray:
Lord, I know You are able to do all things, and I trust Your timing more than my own. Please do not just remove what is uncomfortable. Teach me through it. Give me the strength to obey, the wisdom to see clearly, and the tools I need to become who You are calling me to be. Help me not just ask for change, but participate in it with faith. Amen.
Final Thoughts
Specific prayer is not about controlling God. It is about drawing closer to Him with honesty, intention, and trust.
It is about moving beyond “Lord, fix this” and into “Lord, shape me through this.”
And sometimes the miracle is not that everything around you changes overnight. Sometimes the miracle is that you do.
So if your prayers have felt repetitive, distant, or powerless lately, maybe this is your invitation to pray differently.
Not more perfectly. Just more specifically.
Ask for the strength. Ask for the wisdom. Ask for the discipline. Ask for the next step.
And then watch what God does with a willing heart.

Stay rooted, stay prayerful, and keep seeking God in the details. Sometimes the smallest shift in how we pray opens the door to the biggest change in how we live.
