In fact, because microwave cooking is fast and often requires very little water, it may actually preserve more nutrients than boiling.
Does Microwave Radiation Stay in Food?
No.
Microwave ovens use non ionizing radiation to make water molecules vibrate, creating heat. Once the microwave stops running, no radiation remains in your food.
Your food does not become radioactive.
Are Microwaves Safe?
According to the FDA, microwave ovens that are in good working condition and used as directed are considered safe.
The greater concern is not the microwave itself but what you put inside it.
Be Careful with Plastics
One of the most legitimate concerns involves heating food in plastic containers that are not intended for microwave use.
Some plastics may release chemicals into food when heated.
Whenever possible, choose:
- Glass containers
- Ceramic dishes
- Microwave safe containers
