Cleansing Your Body Naturally: When You Need a Reset, Not a Gimmick

Wendy Francis, NBC-HWC – Board-Certified Health Coach and Functional Nutritionist

One of the most common questions I get as a health coach is: “Should I do a cleanse?”

And honestly… the answer is not always straightforward.

There are countless cleanses, detox kits, teas, powders, pills, juices, and “miracle resets” on the market promising to completely transform your body in three days. Some are harmless. Some can actually be stressful on your body. And many simply distract people from what truly moves the needle long term.

Here’s the reality:

Your body already has a detoxification system.

Your liver, kidneys, digestive system, lymphatic system, skin, and lungs are constantly working together to process and eliminate waste and toxins. The problem usually is not that your body “can’t detox.” The problem is that modern lifestyles overload the system.

Ultra-processed foods. Alcohol. Chronic stress. Poor sleep. Constant snacking. Dehydration. Lack of movement.

Sometimes your body doesn’t need an aggressive cleanse. It simply needs a reset.

What People Often Feel When Their Body Needs a Reset

  • Low energy
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Bloating
  • Brain fog
  • Poor sleep
  • Food cravings
  • Feeling “off”
  • Inflammation or puffiness
  • Feeling sluggish after eating

While these symptoms can absolutely have medical causes that should be evaluated, many people simply benefit from getting back to basics and reducing the burden on their body for a period of time.

The Pros of Doing a Cleanse or Reset

  • Can help interrupt unhealthy eating habits
  • May reduce processed food intake
  • Can improve awareness around hydration and nutrition
  • Often encourages people to slow down and eat more intentionally
  • May reduce bloating and digestive discomfort temporarily
  • Can help people mentally “reset” after periods of overindulgence

The Cons of Extreme Cleanses

  • Very low calorie cleanses can stress the body
  • Some products act as harsh laxatives
  • May disrupt blood sugar balance
  • Can leave people feeling weak, dizzy, or fatigued
  • Often create unrealistic expectations
  • Many people gain everything back once they return to normal habits
  • Some supplements contain questionable ingredients or stimulants

This is where I encourage clients to be careful.

If your “cleanse” leaves you exhausted, shaky, miserable, or chained to the bathroom… your body is probably not thriving from it.

Natural Ways to Reset Your Body Safely

Sometimes the most powerful reset strategies are also the simplest.

1. Hydrate Aggressively

Many people walk around chronically dehydrated and mistake it for fatigue, hunger, cravings, or brain fog.

Increasing water intake for even a few days can make a dramatic difference in how you feel.

Add lemon, cucumber, or mint if it helps you drink more naturally.

2. Remove Ultra-Processed Foods

One of the best “cleanses” you can do is simply removing processed foods for a week.

Focus on:

  • Lean proteins
  • Vegetables
  • Fruit
  • Healthy fats
  • Whole food carbohydrates
  • Simple ingredients

Your body often responds quickly when it is no longer constantly processing artificial ingredients, excess sugar, and inflammatory oils.

3. Try a Gentle 24-Hour Reset Fast

A healthy 24-hour fast can be a very effective way to give your digestive system a break and help reset eating habits.

This does not mean starving yourself for days.

For many people, simply finishing dinner one night and waiting until dinner the following day while staying hydrated can help reduce mindless eating and improve awareness around hunger cues.

Fasting is not appropriate for everyone, especially individuals with certain medical conditions, blood sugar issues, pregnancy, eating disorder history, or those on medications. Always check with your healthcare provider if unsure.

4. Support Your Body Naturally

If someone wants to use supportive natural products, I usually encourage gentle approaches instead of harsh “detox” products.

Examples may include:

  • Fiber support
  • Magnesium
  • Electrolytes
  • Herbal teas
  • Probiotic-rich foods
  • Digestive-supportive whole foods

Your body generally responds better to support than punishment.

5. Prioritize Sleep

Sleep may be one of the most underrated detoxification tools we have.

During sleep, your brain and body perform critical repair and cleanup processes. Poor sleep affects hormones, cravings, inflammation, stress levels, and recovery.

Sometimes what people truly need is not another cleanse kit. They need three nights of quality sleep.

My Perspective as a Health Coach

I am not anti-cleanse.

I simply believe people should understand the difference between supporting their body versus shocking it.

In many cases, getting back to basics works better than chasing extremes.

Hydration. Whole foods. Better sleep. Reduced alcohol. Less processed food. More movement. Lower stress.

Those things may not sound flashy, but they are incredibly powerful.
