Healing from the Ground Up: Why Herbs Are Making a Comeback

Wendy Francis, NBC-HWC – Board-Certified Health Coach and Functional Nutritionist

A Return to What Once Was

Long before prescriptions and manufactured supplements filled our cabinets, people turned to the earth for healing.

Ancient cultures across the world used herbs not as alternatives, but as their primary form of medicine. From Traditional Chinese Medicine to Ayurveda to Indigenous healing practices, plants were used to support the body, restore balance, and promote longevity.

These weren’t trends. They were time-tested systems built on observation, experience, and a deep understanding of how the body responds to nature.

So… What Changed?

Modern medicine has done incredible things. It saves lives, manages acute conditions, and provides solutions when we need them most.

But somewhere along the way, we moved away from supporting the body… and leaned heavily into suppressing symptoms.

It became easier to take a pill than to ask deeper questions:

  • What is my body trying to tell me?
  • Where am I out of balance?
  • What can I do to support my system naturally?

And that’s where herbs come back into the conversation.

What Herbs Actually Do in the Body

Herbs don’t work like quick fixes. They work by supporting your body’s natural processes.

Depending on the herb, they can:

  • Support natural detox pathways (liver, kidneys, lymphatic system)
  • Promote heart health and healthy circulation
  • Enhance memory, focus, and cognitive function
  • Reduce inflammation in muscles and joints
  • Support digestion and gut health
  • Help regulate stress and the nervous system
  • Strengthen immune function

Instead of overriding the body, herbs tend to work in partnership with it.

Why We Drifted Away from Natural Support

Let’s be honest. Taking a pill is easier.

It’s fast, convenient, and often positioned as the only solution.

Herbs, on the other hand, require a different mindset:

  • Consistency over time
  • Understanding your body
  • Choosing quality sources
  • Being patient with results

But here’s the shift happening right now…

People are starting to realize that long-term health isn’t built on quick fixes. It’s built on daily support, small changes, and giving the body what it actually needs.

This Is Just the Beginning

This post is the start of a series where we’ll take a closer look at individual herbs and what they actually do.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll break down:

  • What each herb supports
  • How it works in the body
  • Who it may benefit
  • How to use it safely and effectively

My goal is simple. To help you understand your options so you can make informed decisions about your health.

Not to replace medicine when it’s needed… but to remind you that your body was designed to be supported, not just managed.
