What I Do as a Cognitive Health Coach and How I Help People Break the Patterns That Keep Them Stuck
Wendy Francis, NBC-HWC – Board-Certified Health Coach and Functional Nutritionist.
When people hear the term health coach, they often think it only means food, exercise, or weight loss. And while those things absolutely matter, my work goes much deeper than handing someone a meal plan or telling them to try harder. As a cognitive health coach, I help people recognize the mental patterns, emotional loops, and everyday habits that quietly keep them stuck and then I help them change them.
What Is Cognitive Health Coaching?
Cognitive health coaching is about understanding how your brain drives your behavior. Every habit you have, good or bad, is wired into your brain through repetition. The brain loves efficiency, so once a pattern is created, it will default to it again and again, even when it no longer serves you.
My role is to help you see those patterns clearly, understand why they exist, and then work with you to rewire them using practical, science-based tools rooted in neuroplasticity, which is your brain’s ability to change.
It’s Not Just About “Bad Habits”
When people hear “bad habits,” they often think of obvious things like overeating or skipping workouts. But habits show up in many different ways, some of them subtle and deeply ingrained.
Here are just a few examples of what I help clients work through:
- Overeating or emotional eating patterns
- Struggling with sleep or staying up too late
- Constantly reaching for alcohol to unwind
- Negative self-talk or lack of confidence
- Procrastination and avoidance behaviors
- Shopping habits or spending patterns that feel out of control
- Clutter and hoarding tendencies
- Difficulty staying consistent with routines
- Always starting over and never following through
I have worked with clients across all of these areas, including individuals dealing with things like hoarding behaviors or deeply rooted lifestyle patterns. What I’ve learned is this: the habit itself is rarely the real issue. The pattern behind it is.
How I Help You Break the Cycle
This process is not about restriction, guilt, or digging endlessly into the past. We may briefly look at where a pattern started, but we do not stay there. We acknowledge it, understand it, and then we move forward.
My coaching approach focuses on:
- Pattern recognition so you can clearly see what is happening
- Pattern disruption to interrupt automatic behaviors
- Neuroplasticity exercises to rewire new, healthier responses
- Accountability to keep you moving forward consistently
- Mindset shifts that strengthen confidence and self-trust
And believe it or not, this process can actually be fun. When people start to understand how their brain works, it becomes empowering. You begin to feel in control again instead of feeling like your habits are controlling you.
How Long Does It Take?
One of the most common questions I get is how long it takes to change a habit.
The answer is, it depends on the habit and how committed someone is to the process. Some clients experience noticeable shifts within a few weeks. Others take a bit longer as we work through deeper patterns.
But here’s the truth. Change does not have to take years. With the right tools, guidance, and consistency, meaningful transformation can happen in a relatively short period of time.
The Bottom Line
At the core of what I do, I help people break patterns that are holding them back.
Whether that shows up as weight struggles, poor sleep, stress habits, emotional eating, or something less obvious like avoidance or self-doubt, it all comes back to how the brain is wired.
When you change the pattern, you change the outcome.
And the best part is, once you learn how to do this, you don’t just fix one area of your life. You gain a skill that carries into everything you do.
