How Neuroplasticity Changed the Way I Coach

By Wendy Francis, NBC-HWC | Board-Certified Health Coach

Over the past couple of years, my coaching has evolved in a big way not because I found a trend, but because I found a framework that finally explains why change can feel so hard.

My growing understanding of neuroplasticity and the research I’ve been doing around how the brain adapts, learns, and rewires has completely changed the way I coach. And honestly? It’s been a game changer not only for my clients, but for me too.

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change. It’s how old patterns get reinforced and how new patterns can be built with repetition, intention, and the right tools.

Before, my coaching focus was on helping clients set and achieve goals and trying harder: more motivation, more discipline, more “push.” But what I’ve learned is that lasting change is rarely about pushing harder…it’s about understanding what your brain is doing behind the scenes.

That understanding has shifted my coaching into something more practical and more compassionate. Instead of asking, “Why can’t I just do this?” we start with better questions:

  • What pattern is running right now?
  • What triggers it?
  • What’s the smallest new response we can practice consistently?

Because once you understand how the brain forms habits and protects familiar routines, you stop blaming yourself and you start building a plan that actually works.

The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is creating new pathways, one repeatable choice at a time.

This applies whether you’re trying to improve your nutrition, change your relationship with stress, rebuild confidence, strengthen your focus, or shift patterns that have been running for years. When you learn how to work with your brain, change becomes less exhausting and far more sustainable.
