The Holy Spirit: Not a Force, But a Friend
by Wendy Francis, Believer
Recently, I began reading The Holy Spirit by R.A. Torrey, and even from the first chapter, something shifted in me.
I realized that for much of my life, I thought of the Holy Spirit more like a presence… or a feeling… or even a kind of spiritual energy.
But, what if I’ve been missing something deeper?
What if the Holy Spirit isn’t something we experience… but Someone we are meant to know?
He Is Not an “It”
One of the most powerful takeaways is simple, yet profound: the Holy Spirit is not a force. He is a person.
Not in a human sense, but in the sense that He has intellect, emotions, and will.
- He teaches
- He guides
- He speaks
- He intercedes for us
And maybe most striking of all…
He can be grieved.
You can’t grieve a force. You can only grieve a relationship.
From Power to Relationship
This realization changes everything.
Because if the Holy Spirit is just a power, we try to access Him.
But if He is a person, we are invited to walk with Him.
That means slowing down… listening… and becoming aware of His presence in a much more personal way.
It’s not about striving harder—it’s about connecting deeper.
A Shift in How I Pray
This understanding aligns so deeply with how I’ve started praying differently lately.
For years, my prayers were well-intentioned, but often vague… or focused on asking God to fix things for me.
But I’ve begun to realize something: growth doesn’t come from God doing everything for us…it comes from Him equipping us.
So instead of asking for outcomes, I’ve been asking for strength, clarity, and responsibility in very specific situations.
“God, don’t just remove this stress show me exactly what I’m doing that’s contributing to it, and give me the discipline to change it.”
“Holy Spirit, when I feel triggered in this conversation, slow my reaction. Help me pause, choose my words carefully, and respond in a way that reflects You.”
“Give me the awareness to recognize when I’m falling into old habits and the strength to choose differently in that exact moment.”
“Instead of asking for motivation, give me the consistency to follow through, even when I don’t feel like it.”
These prayers feel different.
They’re more honest… more specific… and more aligned with real change.
Not because God needs details but because it transforms how we show up. Check out last week’s post: Pray More Specifically.
Why This Matters for Your Daily Life
When you begin to see the Holy Spirit as a person:
- Your faith becomes more relational, not routine
- Your decisions become more guided, not reactive
- Your inner life becomes more peaceful, not chaotic
It’s a return to something simple… something grounding… something deeply aligned with how we were created to live.
A Gentle Invitation
Today, instead of rushing through your routine, try this:
Pause.
Be still.
And simply acknowledge Him.
Not as a distant force… but as a present guide.
You may be surprised by what you begin to notice.
